To produce temporary crowns, there are two methods available: the direct method and the indirect method.

1. Direct method:

When using the direct method, the dentist manually shapes the temporary crown material into the desired tooth shape. They do this by using a specialized crown kit, which includes pre-made crown forms for different types of teeth such as incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.

These crown forms are made from a variety of materials, including polycarbonate, acrylic, transparent plastic, and occasionally aluminum.

By utilizing the direct method, temporary crowns can be created and cemented onto prepared teeth right away for optimal results.

2. Indirect method:

The indirect method involves designing the temporary crowns outside the patient’s mouth. After teeth preparation, the dentist takes impressions of the patient’s teeth to create a model. This model is then sent to a dental laboratory, where technicians manufacture the temporary crowns using various materials, similar to the direct method.

Once completed, the temporary crowns are sent back to the dentist, who then cements them onto the prepared teeth during a subsequent appointment.

Both the direct and indirect methods play an essential role in the manufacturing process of temporary crowns, allowing dentists to provide patients with functional and aesthetically pleasing dental restorations.

In addition to temporary crowns, other temporary restorations can be made.

Temporary bridges can be used in cases where extended restorations are needed, though they are not commonly used. Typically, temporary crowns are made for all abutment teeth in these situations.

If there are high aesthetic demands and the restoration will take a longer time to complete, provisional removable dentures are preferred.

Provisional removable dentures are made when large restorations require a lengthy period of execution. For instance, in the case of dental implants, it may take up to 6 months.

After a medical examination, our dentist will discuss with the patient to determine the specific type of temporary restoration that will be made.
