What Panoramic X-Rays are Good For?

The panoramic X-Ray provides the dentist with a comprehensive view of the entire mouth and jaws, which includes all the teeth, the TMJ, and the sinus cavity. While it may not be effective in detecting tiny cavities, it is highly useful in identifying significant issues such as infections, impacted teeth, tumors, degenerative joint disease, and cysts.

Six wisdom teeth instead of the normal four (look for the two small teeth on the upper jaw).

Five of the six wisdom teeth are fully impacted and do not need to be removed.
The sixth wisdom tooth on the lower left (right side of the image) has an infection and needs to be taken out.

The recommended frequency for panoramic X-rays is every five to eight years to assess the jaw for any potential pathology or disease that may not be visible on other types of dental X-rays.

Other types of X-rays offered in addition to panoramic X-rays include bite-wing X-rays, which are used to check for cavities between teeth and screen for periodontal disease by examining bone loss around teeth. Peri-apical X-rays are used to assess the roots of teeth for any signs of infection. CT X-rays, which provide 3D imaging, are used for various dental issues such as implants, wisdom teeth, root canals, and bone grafting.

Concerning radiation, dental X-rays have low radiation doses, with a routine exam exposing patients to less radiation than one day of natural background radiation. In fact, it is comparable to the radiation exposure during a short airplane ride lasting around one to two hours.
